Tutorial Tasks

The in-game tutorial can be viewed by using the F key.
Completed tasks will get a tick in the check box on the right.

Once all tasks are done, the tutorial will disappear and using F will only show the compass.

Gather a Small Stone[]

Small Stone

Stones spawn around the player, just look around on the ground for grey interactable stones. It is best to pick up several stones because you will soon need them.

Additional Information
If hidden behind objects such as foliage, trees and boulders, stones will glow for easy discovery. In the game options the density of the foliage can be reduced to make it easier for the new player to spot stones. (Esc-Options-Video-Foliage Density).
If stones fail to spawn in the vicinity of the player, saving and quitting the game and re-loading the game will trigger the spawning of resources.

Gather a Stick[]

Stick

Sticks spawn around the player, just look around on the ground for interactable sticks.

Additional Information
If hidden behind objects such as foliage, trees and boulders, sticks will glow for easy discovery. In the game options the density of the foliage can be reduced to make it easier for the new player to spot sticks. (Esc-Options-Video-Foliage Density).
If sticks fail to spawn in the vicinity of the player, saving and quitting the game and re-loading the game will trigger the spawning of resources.

Craft a Stone Axe[]

Stone Axe
Tutorial - Stone Axe

Open your Inventory by pressing I and click on the crafting anvil and hammer icon. Alternatively, you can press F5 to immediately open the crafting interface. Drag one stone and one stick (exact number) onto the wood slab and click on the Craft button to craft the Stone Axe.
More ways to transfer items are explained below.

To learn what Crafting Recipes are available, you can view the Itempedia in the build menu. The build menu is found under the books Recipe Book Icon icon. Alternatively, you can press F4.

Additional Information:
The message “Not a valid recipe” will appear over the crafting interface if the number of resources on the wood slab do not match the number of resources required for a valid recipe. When the amount of resources on the crafting interface exactly match the resources required for a valid recipe, the name of the recipe will appear above the slab (in this case “Stone Axe”) as well as a Craft button.

As soon as you press the Craft button, the Stone Axe will automatically be transferred to a free slot in your tools/weapons inventory. To access this inventory, open your regular inventory by pressing I and click on the tools and weapons icon. Alternatively you can press F3 from the main screen.
Note: if all four slots in the tools/weapons inventory are full, you will not be able to craft an additional tool/weapon and you will have to free up a slot by dragging one to the ground first.

Ways to transfer resources from your inventory to a crafting interface, a forge or storage:

  • Drag them with the Left Mouse Button.
  • Click on a single resource or a stack of resources in your inventory with Left Alt + Right Mouse Button to transfer a single item.
  • Drag a stack of resources in your inventory while holding Left Alt to transfer a single item.
  • Click on a stack of resources in your inventory with ⇧ Left Shift + Right Mouse Button to transfer the whole stack.
  • Hold ⇧ Left Shift while dragging a stack with the Left Mouse Button to bring up a slider for selecting the number of items in the stack that you wish to transfer.
  • You can also click on a stack of resources with the Right Mouse Button to halve it or separate one resource from the stack.

Craft a Stone Blade[]

Stone Blade

Open the crafting interface as you did when crafting the Stone Axe and transfer a single Small Stone to the wood slab to craft a Stone Blade. When you click on the Craft button, the Stone Blade will be transferred to your inventory if there is room. If there is no room in your inventory, it will drop to the ground.

Gather Plant Fiber[]

Plant Fiber

Plant Fiber can be gathered by chopping down trees. Equip your Stone Axe by pressing 1 (default for the 1st crafted tool) and chop down a tree by hitting it with the Left Mouse Button. Logs will drop to the ground and plant fiber will automatically be added to your inventory if there is room in it. Otherwise, the fiber will be dropped on the ground.

Additional information:
To equip a tool or weapon, select the number of the slot it occupies in the tools/weapons inventory. If the Stone Axe is the first tool/weapon you craft, it will be in slot 1. To unequip a tool or weapon, press the 0 (zero) key. Alternatively, you can rotate with scrolling Middle Mouse Button up.

Craft a Stone Pickaxe[]

Stone Pickaxe

Now craft a Stone Pickaxe. You will find the recipe in the Weapons section of the Itempedia in the build menu (open the build menu by pressing F4). If the Stone Pickaxe is, as expected, the second tool you have crafted, it will automatically be transferred to the second slot in your tools/weapons inventory. You can equip it by pressing 2 and unequip it by pressing 0 (zero).

Build a Sawbench[]

Sawbench
Tutorial - Sawbench placing

In the build menu (F4) select the Placeables tab. Make sure the Workbenches subsection is selected and click on the thumbnail of the Sawbench. Place the green ghost image of the Sawbench in a desired location and complete the construction by adding the required resources. When completed, place a Wood Log on the Sawbench to make Planks.

Additional information:

Tutorial - Sawbench building

Placeable items are not crafted on a crafting interface. Instead, they are built in place. Placement options (e.g. rotate with the Middle Mouse Button) appear in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Once the green ghost image of the component has been placed with E, it will turn white. Exit the building mode by pressing Tab ↹. You can add the necessary resources to finish building the item by looking at the white ghost image and pressing E. Recipe components that are in your inventory will be added to the ghost image automatically. Placeable items can be picked up and moved (N) to a different location after completion.

Water[]

Water Basin

Build the Water Basin and place it outdoors to accumulate rain water. This water can be picked up with a flask and it can be used to drink or to water crops. Rain water is dirty water and should be boiled before drinking unless it is an emergency.

Additional information:
You will find the recipe for the Water Basin in the Food section of the Itempedia in the build menu (open the build menu by pressing F4). To gather rain water from the Water Basin, look at it and press E to use it. Your food inventory will automatically open and you can drag your flask from the food inventory over the button labeled “Take water” to fill your flask with water that is in the Water Basin.

Build a Foundation[]

Wooden Foundation

In the build menu (books Icon or F4), select the Construction tab and click on the Wooden Foundation thumbnail in the subsection Foundations. Place a foundation in a desired location. You will need to chop more Trees and add logs/planks to complete the construction.

Additional information:
Unlike Placeable components of a fixed size, the height of foundations can be changed by holding X in conjunction with scrolling Middle Mouse Button while still in the green ghost image state. Once a foundation is fully built, it cannot be moved. Destroying a foundation with Delete will return only half of the ingredients that were needed to build it.

Build a Campfire[]

Campfire

In the build menu (books icon or F4), select the Placeables tab and click on the Campfire thumbnail in the subsection Food. Place a Campfire in a desired location and complete the construction by adding the required resources. In the Resources section of the Itempedia you can learn where to find every resource in the game.
Build a Shelter over the campfire to protect the flames from rain. The Shelter can be found in the Construction section of the build menu in the subsection Others.
Once the Campfire built, you will need to activate it with E and add fuel (Sticks, Bark Chips and/or Firewood) to the Campfire’s fuel receptacle and light the fuel.

Cucumber Plant

Finding Carbs[]

Cucumber

Various plants containing Fruits and Veggies spawn randomly fairly close to players and can be harvested. A list of foods can be found in the Itempedia in the Food and Drinks section. These foods provide you with various nutrients including the most important carbohydrates. Harvesting plants will also give you Seeds and Sprouts. These seeds can be planted to grow your own crops. Locate a food plant and harvest it.

Additional Information:
In the game Video Settings the density of the foliage can be reduced to make it easier for the new player to spot edible plants. (Esc-Options-Video-Foliage Density). If plants fail to spawn in the vicinity of the player, saving and quitting the game and re-loading the game will trigger the spawning of resources.

Build a Stone Forge[]

Stone Forge

In the build menu (books icon or F4), select the Placeables tab, and click on the Stone Forge thumbnail in the subsection “Others”. Place a Forge on a foundation and complete the construction by adding the required resources.
This will allow you to smelt Small Stones, Iron Fragments , Ores and Ingots.

Hunting[]

Archer Bow

Animal sounds will help you find prey to hunt. Kill an animal by throwing a spear at it. One hit will suffice and the animal will eventually bleed out. When you catch up to the dead animal, transport it to a Butcher Table in a Log Cart to butcher it.

Animals

Later in the game you will find it more efficient to hunt with an Archer Bow, and you can also use the Truck to transport dead animals. You can store an animal carcass on the tailgate of the Truck, in a Log Cart or on the Butcher Table and it will not spoil. Carcasses left anywhere else will eventually despawn.

Fish also provide protein and can be found in the large lakes identified on the Map. Use a spear and poke at the fish underwater. When you have a fish on the tip of your spear, press E to transfer it to your inventory. Fish can be harvested by dropping it on the ground.

Make an Iron Ingot[]

Iron Ingot

Activate the Stone Forge with E, drag fuel (Sticks, Bark Chips or Firewood) to the forge’s fuel receptacle and light the forge by dragging the Lighter from the inventory over the fuel receptacle.
Place two Small Stones on the smelting circles at the top. Each stone will smelt into an Iron Fragment. Once you have accumulated 5 Iron Fragments, place the stack of 5 on the forge to smelt it into an Iron Ingot. Soon you will want to replace your Stone Forges with Brick Forges, which can smelt 10 stones at a time.
Also, once you have mined Coal in any cave, you can use coal to fuel your fires instead of the already mentioned quicker burning fuels.
