In order to survive in The Infected, players must pay attention to and manage a number of statistics that reflect their health and welfare.
By pressing G on the keyboard, players can toggle the list of Player Stats on and off.
The Player Stats are also automatically displayed every time the food section of the inventory is opened. In this situation, the names of the different stats are displayed as tooltips when players move the mouse cursor over the colored stat bars.
The circular progress bar surrounding the icons for Health, Stamina, Thirst and Sun Resistance indicate that these attributes can be "leveled up". This means that the attributes' maximum value can be increased. The progression is shown as the bar fills up.
Above the Player Stats, the player's current weight and max carrying capacity are displayed.

Food buffs[]

All foods, when eaten, affect some stats temporarily in a positive or negative way. For example, eating Dried Fish replenishes protein but causes thirst. In addition, certain foods have the ability to contribute to leveling up the maximum stat values as described above. You can find a table of these foods and the effect they have on leveling up Player Stats below:

Health Health[]

Health is very important. If your health is reduced to 0, you will die. Many things can lower your health, from falling down, getting attacked by animals/vambies or by letting certain nutrition attributes fall to 0. To increase your health you can use a Medical Kit to heal you up to 100 health at once or a Small Medical Kit which will restore 50 units of health. Sleeping will also rapidly restore your health and is the best way of doing so.

Stamina Stamina[]

Stamina is needed to run and jump, if you run out of stamina you will be exhausted and "crawl" instead of walk until you start to regain stamina. Walking and standing still will allow you to regain stamina again. If you are undernourished and/or thirsty, your maximum stamina level will drop drastically and you will only have a maximum of 50 stamina. Since the Thirst stat depletes more quickly than the other food stats, this commonly happens when the player becomes thirsty. Your maximum stamina level will return to its normal level if you eat and drink enough.

Thirst Thirst[]

Thirst is a nutritional attribute. The lower your Thirst stat is, the more in need of water you are. Your Thirst attribute will gradually decrease no matter your physical activity. There are many ways to increase your thirst stat. You will gain small amounts of Thirst by eating Melons and Watermelons. The best way to increase your Thirst attribute is by drinking Clean Water. However, be careful when eating meats and vegetables as they can also lower your thirst. If your thirst hits 0 your stamina will also reduce to 0 and you will not be able to run.
Running will hasten the decrease of your thirst stat by 1.5 times the normal rate. Your thirst will also start depleting at an accelerated rate if your Sun Resistance is reduced to 0.
Consuming Dirty Water will increase your thirst attribute but will lower your health and should only be done if necessary.

Hunger Hunger[]

Hunger is an overall nutritional attribute that is based on eating a balanced diet of Proteins, Carbs, Fats and Vitamins. When your Hunger attribute reaches 10%, your health will continuously decline until you consume much needed food. In addition, when your hunger bar reaches as low as 50%, your max stamina will be reduced. Example: If your max stamina is 100 and your hunger bar is 49%, your new Stamina Max will be: 100 * 0.49 = 49

Protein Proteins[]

Proteins are a nutritional attribute and will steadily decrease until more Proteins are consumed. Like all nutritional attributes, the Protein attribute gradually decreases even if you are not doing anything at all. The best source for early proteins is dried or cooked fish/meat. Later in game, the best source of proteins is Meat Stew and Rations, which also buff certain max attributes. The value of your Protein attribute is incorporated into the main Hunger attribute.

Carb Carbs[]

Carb Bar
Carbs are a nutritional attribute and will steadily decrease until more Carbs are consumed no matter your activity. Good sources of Carbs are Melons and Pumpkin Slices. In later game, the best source of carbs are Fruit Salad and Rations, which also buff certain max attributes.
The value of your Carbs attribute is incorporated into the main Hunger attribute.

Fat Fats[]

Fats are a nutritional attribute and will steadily decrease until more Fats are consumed. Early fats are gained from eating meats and fish as well as Potatoes, later the best source for fat is Meat Stew and Rations.
The value of your Fats attribute is incorporated into the main Hunger attribute.

Vitamin Vitamins[]

Vitamins are a nutritional attribute and will steadily decrease until more Vitamins are consumed. In early game, the best way to gain vitamins is to eat Cucumbers, Potatoes and Corn. In later game, the best source for vitamins are Veggie Salad and Rations, which also buff certain max attributes.
The value of your Vitamins attribute is incorporated into the main Hunger attribute.

Energy Energy[]

Energy Bar
Energy is used for everything, and you cannot do anything without using energy. All foods give a little energy, the best early game food being a Melon. The best food source of energy later in the game is a Ration. The best way to increase energy is by sleeping.
When your energy is 0 you will lose health until you sleep or die.

Sun Resistance Sun Resistance[]

Sun Resistance is a stat that goes down while being exposed to the sun. Once it is reduced to 0, your thirst depletion rate will be increased by 3. You can replenish your sun resistance stat by taking cover in the shade or using Potato Paste to increase the attribute by 25.
Once the Sun Resistance stat is at 0 you will also get a sunburn.

Consuming Potato Pie will increase your max Sun Resistance by 0.5.
