A Plant Bed is a craftable container filled with soil which is used to grow crops. For plantables, see Seeds and Sprouts.
To grow a crop on a Plant Bed, the player must have a plant seed or sprout in their backpack, activate the Plant Bed, and drag and drop the desired seed or sprout onto the "Add Seed" receptacle. Once this is done the seed or sprout is planted.
Seeds and sprouts need water to grow and mature. Plant Beds get watered either by rain or by the player manually watering them.
Water can be added manually by activating the Plant Bed and dragging the Flask which contains water to the "Add water" receptacle. The "Add water" receptacle is visible only when a seed or sprout is planted in the Plant Bed.
When a Plant Bed is placed inside a Greenhouse, it does not get water from rain. Hence the player has to either manually add water to it or have a Water House nearby. A nearby Water House which is turned on supplies water to all the Plant Beds in the Greenhouse.
If the player has rescued NPC Mike and assigned the task "take care of plant beds" to him, Mike will water, harvest and replant all crops in Plant Beds.
Once the crop is mature, it can be harvested. The crop's seed will be returned to the player's inventory upon harvesting, and it can be re-planted in the Plant Bed.
Plants take 22 minutes to grow, in real time, as long as they are watered.
During Winter season when it snows, the crops in the Plant Bed will die if the Plant Bed is not placed inside a heated enclosed building or a Greenhouse.
Moving a Plant Bed that has a partially grown crop in it will make the crop disappear and the seed will be lost.
