Fish is an important food source in The Infected, and fishing is an easy way to obtain protein on demand at the fish lake location during the warmer months.
Availability of Fish[]
Fish are available in a central location in the fishing lakes designated on the in-game Map. Other bodies of water contain no fish. Generally speaking, players cannot fish in winter because the waters in the game are frozen over. However, there have been reports of players being able to spear fish through the ice when the fish swim right underneath the surface.
The scarcity of fishing spots on the map is compensated by the ability to store fish for an extremely long time, so only an occasional trip to a fishing spot is required.
Fishing Technique[]
The most efficient way to catch fish is to stab them with a spear while swimming. Pressing E will immediately transfer the fish from the tip of the spear to the player's inventory.
Visibility is crucial for the ability to fish efficiently. Players should only attempt to fish when the sun is shining, otherwise the waters are too murky to allow them to see the fish. Once players have acquired the Yellow Helmet, which has an integrated light source, they can fish on dark days or even at night while wearing it.
Drying Fish[]
All types of whole fish can be dried on a Drying Rack. The drying process extends the perish time of the whole fish for an additional 16 hours. Whole Dried Fish can be harvested to obtain individual pieces of edible Dried Fish. The Perish time of Dried Fish is 18 hours.
Maximizing Fish Storage Time[]
A whole unharvested Tuna, Trout or Bluegill will keep for 4 hours. After harvesting, a piece of harvested Raw Fish has a spoilage time of only 30 minutes, so it is a good idea to store fish as whole fish to extend the lifetime of stored fish. To further maximize storage time of Fish, you can store the unharvested raw Tuna, Trout or Bluegill for almost 4 hours, then dry them on a Drying Rack, which will prevent the fish from spoiling for another 16 hours, then harvest the dried Tuna, Trout or Bluegill to obtain edible chunks of Dried Fish which won't spoil for another 18 hours.
Harvesting Fish[]
To harvest a whole fish (raw or dried) into individual pieces, the player must first drop it on the ground, aim the cursor at the fish and press and hold
until the prompt appears to harvest or destroy the fish. Select "Harvest" with
. The individual pieces of raw or dried fish will automatically be transferred to the player's Food Inventory if there is room. If there is no room in the Food Inventory, the pieces of fish will drop to the ground.
