The Coal Heater is a small stove-like device designed to heat the player's base in the cold months. When activated (default E), the user interface of the Coal Heater displays a fuel receptacle which must be filled with one piece of Coal. Players can light the Coal Heater by dragging their Lighter over the fuel receptacle. Players can extinguish the fire again by dragging their Flask or Large Flask of water over the fuel receptacle. This action will remove one unit of water from the flask.
The Coal Heater can heat a 5x5 area that surrounds it up to 3 stories in height. Within range of a Coal Heater while the world temperature is less than 23° C, the base temperature of a fully enclosed base will be adjusted to 23° C. Within range of a Coal Heater outside or in an unsealed base, the temperature will be increased by 5°. A fully enclosed base must have walls and ceilings. Windows need not be sealed, but in winter an unsealed window can lower the room temperature in the vicinity of the window.
A fully fueled Coal Heater will burn for 165 minutes, in real time; 5 times that of a Campfire/Stone Forge, and 2.5 times that of a Metal Stove/Brick Forge.
The recipe for the Coal Heater is found in the Placeables section of the Build Menu under Others.

History[]
| v. 4.0 | Coal Heater introduced to the game. |
| v. 4.0 | Some alterations to how forges, stoves and coal heaters heat interiors. If you are within range of one of these heat sources within a base while the world temperature is less than 23°C, your base temperature will be adjusted to 23°C, which does not include clothing currently equipped (which will also add to your temperature reading). If you are in range of one of the above heat sources but either not in your base or in a base that is not sealed, they will increase heat by 5 degrees. |
