There is an invisible barrier in the NW mine. It's roughly a line from the rock inside straight across. This is facing West. I'm standing where the barrier is. This is the southern part of the NW mine.

Oil Extractor doesn't work as expected. It now asks for Oil Shale. Where do I get this? It is not producing oil cans as before.
I can't speak to your feelings about mountains, but I would suggest that the claim pole is not really an issue: there is nothing preventing you from multiple claimsites so you could place them adjacent to each other, for whatever your build plans are.
Going to answer my own question. Having 2 beds in your home camp does indeed break the spawn point, even if you designate one of them. You end up at the default spawn point at the start of the game. One only in your home base.
However, you can have beds in other camps: I created some other claimsites by towns and put beds in them. This was so I could make multiple town runs on the same trip and be able to rest, then continue on.
Does having more than one bed break the spawn point? It certainly seems so.
